Harry Webster Barnett [b.2.9.4.8]

Harry Webster Barnett was the eighth child of Arthur George Barnett and Kate Webster, born in Dunsden, Oxon on November 16th, 1887.

At the time of the 1891 census Harry was listed with his parents at Hampstead Farm, Eye & Dunsden, Oxon.

He was still with his parents in 1901 at Priest Hill, Caversham, Oxon.

In 1911 Harry was still living with his parents & brother George at 33A Prospect St, Caversham. Harry had served with the 3rd Coldstream Guards for 8 and a half years & was at this time a Lance Corporal.

Harry enlisted in the Royal Marines Band on July 11th, 1914 & served with them as a musician until he was discharged on 25th March 1929.  He served on the battleship ‘Agincourt’ during WW1 and after his promotion to corporal in 1919 he  continued to serve on various ships (including the ‘Pembroke’ ‘Hawkins’ & ‘Calliope’) between periods at the Royal Naval School of Music, Portsmouth.

There is a record of Harry Barnett, a musician aged 42, travelling on the S.S. Remuera to Wellington, New Zealand from Southampton on April 12th, 1929.  His last address was given as 43 Queen St, Portsmouth.  Harry’s sister Ellinor & husband Frank French & family had left for New Zealand in 1920, therefore it is possible that he was going to visit them.

Harry lived in Otaki, Wellington, NZ being recorded there on the electoral register in 1935 & 1938.

Harry died in New Zealand in 1939.
